Baby Girl’s last week as a ten month old:
47 weeks (October 28)
It took me awhile to realize it, but my little baby is almost 11 months old… And that means she’s getting closer to the BIG ONE! How amazing is that? For a child with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Type 1), reaching the age of one is a huge deal. We are fully prepared to celebrate when the time comes; I have a “Frozen”-themed party planned for December 6th, perfect for a winter birthday.
After the pneumonia issue Khloë had, Jordan and I are doing our best to keep her from getting sick again. However, I’m not prepared for us to hole ourselves away for the entire winter. Maybe that’s what we should be doing, but right now I don’t think that is best for our little one. I think it’s important she has contact with friends and family. I’ve said this many times–Khloë is a very happy little girl who loves to socialize. It would be wrong to take that away from her.
Anyway, Tuesday afternoon we headed in to see Dr K for our flu shots. I’ve never had a flu shot before, but since Khloë needed to get hers, I got mine too. Ouch! For the rest of the day, and even a bit of the next, my arm was useless! It was so sore that I could hardly lift a glass of water… That’s never happened to me before with a needle.
Mary came Wednesday morning. She’s making a point of doing Khloë’s therapy as the first appointment of the day so that she doesn’t bring yucky germs into our house. She even wore a mask to protect Khloë. She’s an awesome lady and we love how she gets Baby Girl excited about new toys and activities.
Khloë celebrated her first Halloween on Friday! We didn’t take her Trick or Treating as it was much too cold out. Instead, Stacey and her two girls came over to play. Sofia dressed up as Sofia the First and little Raylyn wore a Tinkerbell costume. I had ordered a gorgeous tutu dress and matching headband from OnceUponATimeTuTus on Etsy and put that on Khloë so she could be a princess. I set up a back-drop, decorated it with free Halloween printables found on Pinterest, and did a photo shoot!
The nurse that visits once a month came on Saturday. I caught her up on everything that had happened over the past few weeks. She listened to Khloë’s lungs and said they sounded clear. I was getting worried that she might be getting sick again because since Friday she’s been sounding phlegmy. No matter how much I cough her (ie. use the CoughAssist machine to simulate a strong cough) and suction her throat/nose, I can’t get that yucky noise out of her. So even though the nurse said her lungs sound great, I’m still doing a full breathing treatment in the morning after she wakes and before bed, and any extras when I think she needs it.
Back in the beginning of July, my mom hosted a big party at the cottage. The party was to celebrate three things: my nephew Ashe’s 3rd birthday, Khloë’s 7 month milestone, and my brother Mark’s visit from Newfoundland.
Jordan, Khloë, and I spent a couple extra days before the party hanging out at the cottage. We slept in the guest cottage–the first time I’d slept in there in about five years!–and enjoyed the beautiful weather and laid-back atmosphere. The party came about three weeks after Khloë’s heart-wrenching diagnosis, so it was wonderful to get away for a mini-vacation.
Happy 3rd Birthday, Ashe!
All our friends and family came out on July 5th to celebrate with us! There was plenty of great food and of course lots of baked goodies courtesy of me. 😉 I even made Khloë a special chocolate pudding, which I think she enjoyed.
Keesje and I used last year’s “Thomas the Tank Engine” decorations and added in some Disney Princess bits n’ pieces for a girly touch! There were lots of outdoor toys for the kids, including a water table. Plus swimming and paddle-boating!
What a great party! I am so happy that everyone had a great time. Let’s do it again next summer!
Sorry for the late updates! We were away for a week and then had company over my birthday weekend. Trying to play catch-up before we head away for 2 and a half weeks!
My girl turned 7 months old in the middle of the “week”:
30 weeks (July 1)
Canada Day was not eventful; we did nothing other than a mini photo shoot. Khloë was in bed early and wouldn’t really understand the concept of celebrating Canada at her age.
On Thursday we packed up the car and drove the 3 and a half hours to my mom’s cottage. We got settled in the guest cabin, set up Khloë’s bed and the camera for the monitor, and then enjoyed the fresh air and beautiful view over the lake. It was so nice to get some relaxation time in and it was just as wonderful to see my mom! Even though most mornings she was awake at 6:30 am, I was pleased with how well Khloë adjusted to being away from home for a longer period of time.
Friday we took Baby Girl to visit my tante and cousins. Khloë had her first ferry ride!

And Saturday was the Great Summer Spectacular BBQ for Ashe’s 3rd birthday and Khloë’s 7 month “half” birthday. The cottage was a happenin’ place that day! So many people came out to celebrate with us. I plan on writing a separate post about the birthday bash. We spent the following day winding down from the crazy party and enjoyed hanging out with my brothers and sisters. My brother Mark, who lives in Newfoundland, flew down for a few days with his girlfriend. Khloë has finally met all her uncles!
To end a great week, on Monday we drove to Ottawa and checked in at Roger’s House (CHEO) for our 3 day stay.
My little nephew will be 2 years old next Saturday. Isn’t that crazy? We are having a “Thomas the Train” birthday party for him down at the cottage. He loves “choo choos” so much right now. I’m really excited to drive down next week for another visit with the little monkey.

With Jordan beginning a new occupation in the military this summer, he will be going away on course in the fall. And doesn’t it just happen to occur during our planned trip to Walt Disney World. I’ve recently cancelled the trip and we will be getting our deposit back. I’m sad that we won’t get to go, but there’s other news to keep us happy.
On December 16, 2013 I will be 40 weeks pregnant. 🙂
I turned the big 30 this month. A little scary to think about, but I’m going to just let it slide on by. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of this birthday so I asked Jordan to take me to Marble Slab for an ice cream treat rather than doing anything fancy. A waffle bowl filled with a scoop of birthday cake, chai, and double dark chocolate ice cream, with pecans mixed in:

We celebrated another birthday this month. My nephew, Ashe, turned 1 year old on July 6th! We had a barbecue down at the cottage and some of my sister’s friends came to help celebrate this amazing milestone.

Back in May, my friend Nancy got married during the long weekend. My sister, Ashe, Jordan, and I drove up to attend the ceremony and reception. We stayed overnight in a hotel and then spent the holiday Monday doing some more visiting. Breakfast at Cora’s near the hotel, then a few hours at the Vaughn Mills mall so Keesje could visit with Shelley, and then finally a quick visit with our sister Crystal and her boyfriend Lukas in their new apartment. I realized I never wrote a post about that fun weekend so here are a few photos:
