A whole lot of playing “catch up”

After two weeks of living in our new house, Jordan was sent away on an exercise in the U.S. until the first week of March and I was left on my own. I don’t know anybody here, which made it kind of lonely. I ended up going back to Kingston for four days, staying at my mom’s house and visiting my family and old co-workers. I was really missing my nephew Ashe, so it was great to get to spend so much time with him. He’s such a happy child!

I’ve noticed that it seems to snow every day here, even if it only lasts a few minutes. The snow is also heavier and sticks to the ground much longer than I’ve seen in Kingston. I hate shoveling. Now that it’s April, the snow is finally melting.

When my darling husband returned, he used up the rest of his leave and ended up with the majority of March off work. We spent a weekend in Kingston staying with friends and I got to visit with Ashe again (in the above photo). Little monkey was 20 months old in that picture, and as of yesterday he’s now 21 months. He’ll be two this July, which is insane!

My mom came up for the second last weekend of March. We painted the master bedroom:

I am SO excited about moving our furniture into that room. I’ve always wanted a purple room and Jordan said he didn’t care what colour our bedroom was. 🙂 While my mom was here we did lots of cooking and baking. She showed me how to make mushroom risotto. OMG, delicious! I am not a fan of rice, and her risotto was like eating dessert. We also used my Kitchen Aid mixer for the first time (she wants to buy one) and made caramel sticky rolls from scratch and applesauce muffins.

We also spent Easter weekend in Ottawa at his sister and brother-in-law’s. Our niece, Zoë, is just over a year old now. She’s still shy and takes awhile to warm up to us. She’s pretty cute. We didn’t do anything fancy, just hung around the house or went shopping, and had Easter breakfast at their church on Sunday morning, which I think we did last year as well. On the drive home, we detoured through Fort-Coulonge because Jordan wanted to see the red covered bridge:

I’ve begun learning how to use my Canon 60D camera on Manual mode. With the help of this book:

It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’m now taking the time to teach myself. Doesn’t seem as difficult as I expected, but I’ve still got lots to learn. My camera came with a Canon 18-200mm IS lens and I have been saving up to purchase the Sigma 17-70mm OS lens. One more week and I should be able to buy it. I’m really excited! Not only for a new lens, but for Walt Disney World!

That’s right, we are going to the World where dreams do come true! We are booked into POP Century, a value resort, for 8 nights/9 days in October. We are planning to drive and will also spend a night and full day in Washington, D.C. I’m a little obsessed with Disney World right now. I’ve done so much research and planning already. I even have an itinerary done up in Excel. Okay, I’m crazy. But anyway, I’m going to master Manual mode on my camera and take amazing photos on our vacation, I just know it! 😉

Christmas Day 2012

The site has been down for a bit, or very slow, due to some issues that Surpass has now fixed and I’m finally able to login to my WordPress. I’m happy that they did their best to fix the issue and kept me updated during the whole process without my having to ask.

Since I have very little time to devote to fanlistings like I used to, I have closed them all and now Quicksylver.org and Figuristka.org both redirect to this blog until I figure out what I want to do with them. I may let Figuristka.org expire at the end of January.

Anyway, Christmas 2012 was spent at my mom’s.

My mom planned a sort of “drop-in” event, meaning that between 2-4 pm anyone was welcome to show up and have some Christmas treats. There were all sorts of baked goodies and drinks available. After everyone left, my mom had turkey dinner for Jordan and I, my two sisters and their significant others, and my nephew. The food was amazing! Later, we Skyped my brother in Newfoundland.

This was Ashe’s second Christmas and he was spoiled with gifts! He loved gift bags and tissue paper more than the gifts, I think.

Our move date is looming closer! Pack Day is January 30th. I only have a couple weeks left at work. This is crazy! I’ve contacted our phone company, cancelled our current internet provider, and booked another one for the new house. There is still plenty of things left for me to organize or worry about. I hope this move goes smoothly.

I’m currently working on a cute cross-stitch pattern for Michelle’s baby that is due in May. It’s coming along nicely and keeping my mind occupied. Sucks that I won’t be around when the baby is born.

Two birthdays in July

I turned the big 30 this month. A little scary to think about, but I’m going to just let it slide on by. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of this birthday so I asked Jordan to take me to Marble Slab for an ice cream treat rather than doing anything fancy. A waffle bowl filled with a scoop of birthday cake, chai, and double dark chocolate ice cream, with pecans mixed in:

We celebrated another birthday this month. My nephew, Ashe, turned 1 year old on July 6th! We had a barbecue down at the cottage and some of my sister’s friends came to help celebrate this amazing milestone.

Back in May, my friend Nancy got married during the long weekend. My sister, Ashe, Jordan, and I drove up to attend the ceremony and reception. We stayed overnight in a hotel and then spent the holiday Monday doing some more visiting. Breakfast at Cora’s near the hotel, then a few hours at the Vaughn Mills mall so Keesje could visit with Shelley, and then finally a quick visit with our sister Crystal and her boyfriend Lukas in their new apartment. I realized I never wrote a post about that fun weekend so here are a few photos:

Until next time!

I had just started my Dominican post when my computer died! At first we thought it was the hard drive, but after talking to someone at work we figured out that it was the power supply. My husband brought me to Canada Computers downtown and we purchased a much better power supply. After installation, my computer was back to normal and would actually turn on. I was going crazy without my computer!

Now that I’m back, though, I’m going to be even more busy. We have recently received our posting message, which means we have until July to sell our house and buy a new one in our new location. I’m already stressed out trying to get the house in decent order. I feel like it’s a complete write-off, with stuff EVERYWHERE. Trying to purge, get rid of junk that we haven’t used since moving here, etc.

In other news, my nephew is almost 9 months old! He is starting to stand on his own for short periods of time. Uh oh! And he loves to play in curtains.

I have also decided to participate in fatmumslim’s April photo challenge on Instagram.

Hopefully I can keep up with this, even if I’m late to posting the photos on here. 🙂
